Prospective MSc Students

Acceptance into the MSc program is very competitive. Applicants must meet the admissions requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and also the program. Please read the following carefully.

Requirements:

1)

Agreement from a qualified faculty member eligible to supervise MSc students and a member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies who is willing to supervise your project.

2)

Completion of a recognized baccalaureate degree in a health-related discipline such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Life Sciences or Social Sciences, and the successful completion of the following prerequisite: a minimum of 3 credits in research methods and/or analysis

3)

Academic excellence: overall average of at least B+ (76% at UBC) in senior level courses (300 and 400 level)

4)

Graduate Record Exam 
The submission of results of the general Graduate Record Exam (GRE) are required for students who have not graduated from a Canadian institution.

5)

English Competency

Applicants who have completed a degree in which English is not the primary language of instruction must present evidence of competency to pursue studies in the English Language prior to being extended an offer of admission. Acceptable English language proficiency tests for applicants to the Master of Science program are:

TOEFL

Test of English as a Foreign Language
a minimum score of 600 (paper version); 250 (computer version)

MELAB

Michigan English Language Assessment Battery
a minimum overall score of 81

IELTS

International English Language Testing Service
a minimum overall band score of 6.5 us required with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component of the academic (NOT general) IELTS test.

Application Procedures

Deadlines:
Applicants to our MSc program should obtain, complete and submit necessary forms and transcripts according to the following deadlines:

February 1           
to begin studies in September

June 1
               to begin studies in January

Application Fees:
A non-refundable application fee is required, cannot be deferred and is valid for only one application year. The online application accomodates credit card payment via Visa or Mastercard.

        Current Graduate Application Fees
        Canadians (and Permanent Residents):         (CDN) $91.80
        International Applicants:                            (CDN) $153.00

Required Documents:
Applications will NOT be considered complete and therefore, NOT considered until all of the following documents are received by the School:

  • A completed Graduate Studies Online application form.

  • Two copies of official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended (or in which one is currently enrolled). Note to International Applicants: The Faculty of Graduate Studies has very strict requirements for these documents. Transcript Information for International Students

    For current and former UBC students, you do not need to send in official transcripts for your UBC program as part of your graduate application package. However, please be aware that you are still responsible for submitting transcripts from all other from all other post-secondary institutions that you have attended (e.g., exchange year, transfer year, etc.). These transcripts must be mailed directly by the registrar of the institution to the School. If any transcript is not in English or French, an official translation must also be provided.

  • Three letters of reference, at least one of which should be written by an individual who has knowledge of the applicant's academic and/or research abilities. These letters must be mailed directly to the school by the referees or they may be submitted online. Instructions for Reference Letters

Selection of candidates is made with an established yearly quota on a competitive basis with the most highly qualified applicants offered admissions. Selection is based on academic qualifications, letters of reference, clinical experience, and motivation to pursue graduate study as reflected in the written statement.

Students must contact one or more potential faculty supervisors to discuss their research interests prior to the application deadline. Determining an appropriate student-supervisor match requires considerable dialogue so this process should be initiated well before the application deadline.
